The Pueo is the Hawaiian Short Eared Owl. These owls are active during both the day and night. This Pueo was photoraphed as it stalked prey from a barbed-wire fence near the Parker Ranch on the Big Island. Here, at dusk, they can often be seen hovering silently above the grassy fields, hunting for mice. Their calls sound similar to the bark of a small dog.
